Because Storybook Farm is a non-profit organization, we heavily rely on our volunteers to help us operate the Farm successfully. There are many ways to get involved; assisting with sessions and field trips, daily chores and general up keep, are just a few of the duties volunteers help with each week.

Session volunteers can expect to commit to an average of 10 weeks of consistent volunteer time in the spring and fall, and five weeks during the summer. Our session volunteers are responsible for greeting families, assisting the children with tacking and grooming the horse, leading or side walking during the ride and helping with craft time.

Session Volunteer Requirements

- Must be at least 15 years old.

- Must complete volunteer training

- Must be committed to volunteering consistently each week.

- Must wear close-toed shoes and appropriate clothing.

Individuals who are interested in volunteering with sessions must complete two training sessions. The training generally last several hours and consists of learning about the children the volunteers will be assisting, horse management, proper safety precautions and about the ministry at Storybook Farm.  Spring Sessions will begin the week of February 21 and run through the week of April 9 with the week of March 12 off for spring break. We still have spots open for the spring sessions so please e-mail us at info@HopeOnHorseback.org if you are interested in volunteering.

Non-Session Volunteers

If you are interested in volunteering but cannot commit to a session time each week, we would still love to have you volunteer. There are always plenty of ways to help around the Farm other than just during session times. Please e-mail us at info@HopeOnHorseback.org if any of these times work for you.

Thoughts from a Volunteer...

"I first became a volunteer at Storybook Farm because of an education class.  During that semester, I discovered not only what Storybook Farmdoes, but just how profoundly it impacts kids' and young adults' lives. The happiness that you see in the kids that I have worked with at Storybook is irreplaceable.  Seeing the growth that these kids make through their time at the Farm is so encouraging and exciting.  I not only fell in love with Storybook, but I’ve grown to see them as part of my family.

Because of this volunteer experience, I have become more interested in the area of Autism. I have really enjoyed being paired up with riders with Autism and other disabilities because I am not only able to learn more about them, but I also get to spend time with them outside of a school setting.

I graduated from Auburn in 2011 with a degree in Collaborative Special Education, but decided to continue my education. I am now
in my first semester of graduate school in Special Education with an emphasis in Autism! I still find time to volunteer and am happy to be going on three years!

Storybook Farm has truly been a blessing in my life, and I’ve loved every minute spent at this amazing, wonderful, loving community!"
